FISHING REPORTS
from some of the BEST PLACES TO FISH !
18th December, 2008: FISHING REPORT:
Wausau, Central Wisconsin Area
by Joel DeBoer of
Wisconsin Angling Adventures
Despite the bone chilling cold weather over the
past week, anglers that have braved the bitterly cold temps and wind are still
reporting good action on a variety of fish species.
The panfish bite is still going strong with many anglers reporting good catches
of big bluegills. Fish are being caught on small jigs tipped with waxworms or
mousies. The crappie bite has absolutely been on fire with some very large fish
being caught on lakes in the Wausau/Central Wisconsin area. Anglers using
tip-downs with small crappie minnows have reported good success during the dawn
and twilight hours, while jig fishermen have caught fish throughout the day
using a locator and hole hopping to locate active fish.
The walleye bite is still going strong with reports of many fish in the 20-28"
slot being caught. Successful anglers are catching fish in shallow water 2-6
feet deep as they target fish associated with weeds. Medium shiners used on
tip-ups seem to be producing the best but anglers are also reporting good
catches being made on jig rods as anglers once again seek out active fish.
Strong bites and good catches after dark are also being reported.
The northern bite on Wausau/Central Wisconsin lakes continues to be very good.
Anglers are reporting the best catches associated with shallow weed beds in 3-5
feet of water using large golden shiners beneath tip-ups. Although often
overlooked by trophy pike fishermen, the Wausau area contains some true giant
specimens just waiting to be caught.
Even with the cold weather, anglers are reminded to use caution when venturing
out onto area lakes. Enjoy the wonderful opportunities that winter and ice
fishing bring to Wausau/Central Wisconsin!
