FISHING REPORTS
from some of the BEST PLACES TO FISH !
1 November, 2008: FISHING REPORT:
Wausau, Central Wisconsin Area
by Joel DeBoer of
Wisconsin Angling Adventures
Regarded as one of the best times of year to
score on trophy fish, the
autumn bite in the Central Wisconsin area remains solid for a variety of
species. As the fall has been progressing, fish have been moving and
holding out deeper in the rivers, lakes, and reservoirs of our area.
Excellent areas to begin your search have been hard-bottomed areas in
proximity to structure or current breaks.
Livebait has been working excellent lately with
jig and minnow
combinations accounting for splendid mixed bags of smallmouth bass,
walleyes, white bass, and crappies. Try casting jigs along the sharper
hard-bottomed break-lines, up and under deeper undercut banks, or parallel
to downed timber and rock outcroppings. In addition, both smallmouth and
walleyes are being caught by anglers casting or trolling crankbaits; more
natural schemes such as perch and sucker patterns are producing best.
Crappie anglers are also doing well by working slip bobber rigs baited with
minnows by probing deeper cover laden backwater areas or fishing deeper
break-lines where schools of crappies can still be found suspended.
Both muskies and northern pike have been feeding aggressively with
true trophy fish of both species having been caught and released within the
past week. A combination of casting jerkbaits, crankbaits, or large jigs
while hanging live suckers over the side of the boat is resulting in steady
action; some days the fish are preferring the live suckers while other days
the artificial lures are being struck. Anglers looking to cast should key
in on irregularities in the river channel or lake basin and near river and
creek mouths.
Unlike many other bodies of water in the state,
motor trolling is permitted
on the Wisconsin River system in the Wausau area and an effective method of
producing not only walleyes, but both large muskies and pike. Deep diving
crankbaits worked over deep flats or along river channel edges are producing
fish and will continue to do so until ice-up.
