The
Salmon Season in the area has pretty well come to an end. All fishing for any
migrating salmon off of Ucluelet and the surflline of Barkley sound is all but
over. The feeder spring fishing in these two areas is picking up as it often
does at this time of year.
Many of the prime fishing areas on Vancouver Islands West Coast are reporting
some feeder or winter spring fishing as well as Coho fishing. The Somass-Stamp
River system continues to produce some excellent Coho and Fall Steelhead
fishing.
Port Alberni Inlet
& Barkley Sound
The fishing in The Port Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound has been very slow for
the last month. There has been some Chum Salmon fishing in Sarita Bay. A few
sport fishermen and salmon fishing charter guides have taken advantage of the
beautiful fall days on the water and have had some success at Cous Creek and the
Nahmint Bay area. Those who want to continue fishing Chum are being directed to
Browns Bay. The run of Chum, which enter the Inlet beginning in late September
were in good numbers and most have run up into Cous Creek while others have
entered the Somass and are beginning to spawn. Of course there are numerous
creeks and rivers, which some Chum also travel to end their final destination.
Barkley Sound is reporting a few feeder springs up to ten pounds. There have
been some successful days for guests with guide Mike along the Sound surfline
and the Meares, Swale Rock, and Vernon Bay areas. The feeder Chinook are found
where there is bait and they have been hitting anchovies in Rhys Davis Anchovy
Specials in glow, clear, and purple haze.
Ucluelet
The
water off of Ucluelet has been excellent the last few days. Salmon fishing
charters, sport fishing, and commercial fishing for feeder Chinook has been
great just inside The Wreck. Big Bank has also been producing some good feeder
Chinook and late Coho fishing and halibut fishing. There has been a commercial
troll opening off of Ucluelet also. Most of the fleet has done reasonably well
as there have been plenty of feeder Chinook from seven to fifteen pounds found
in water as deep as 120 feet. Graham a salmon/halibut fishing charter guide has
had two very successful days out at the Big Bank with guests from Alberta. The
group each day picked up four halibut ranging from twelve to fifteen pounds, two
hatchery Coho at fourteen pounds, and two ten pound feeder Chinook. The halibut
were picked up on the jig using salmon stomachs and octopus. The salmon have
been hitting anchovy in glow Rhys Davis Teaser heads and purple haze and white
hootchies. Sport fishermen going out in the waters off of Ucluelet should check
weather conditions each day. This time of year can see abrupt changes in wind
direction and of course storms can move in very quickly. The water has been very
pleasant the last few days.
Somass- Stamp River
Coho fishing in the area from Robertson Creek Hatchery down to the Stamp Falls
has been very good. Fishing Charter Guides have been doing well drift fishing on
jet boats using spinners for Coho. Many of the Coho are being returned to the
river as most guests are enjoying catch and release. Limits are still at two
hatchery Coho per guest daily. The Fall Steelhead are beginning to light up also
in the upper river. The Chinook are spawning in the river and have started to
drop their eggs, which has improved the Steelhead fishing up. Guides are
drifting and using Janson eggs. We are expecting the Fall Steelhead fishing to
continue to the end of November. Once the late summer or Fall Steelhead fishing
ends there is usually a small window of time before the Winter Steelhead season
begins.
Escapement to 25th
October, 2007
Chinook escapement through
Stamp Falls is 16,550 adults and 2,000 jacks.
Coho escapement through Stamp Falls is 42,940 adults and 3,484 jacks.
Sockeye escapement to Great Central Lake is 70,503 adults and 7,100
jacks.
Sockeye escapement to Sproat Lake has totaled 61,000 adults and 11,104
jacks.
The escapement totals for Chinook and Coho could slightly change as they will be
calculated until mid November. The escapement for sockeye will likely not
change.
