King Salmon Run - Mid May through July there are 2 runs of Kings.
Traditionally the 2nd Run has larger numbers and larger fish. Still the World
Record King Salmon of 97 pounds was caught on May 19. On the Kenai Peninsula you
are allowed only 2 Kings from the Kenai River and 5 total for the year. This
includes fish caught in the Cook Inlet. There is a size restriction 46 inches to
55 inches on the Kenai River only. Average fish is over 30 pounds and can reach
50 to 60 pounds with occasional fish in the 80 and 90 pound range.
Red Salmon - Run is normally Mid to late June through July and
occasionally into August. You can keep 3 Reds a day. Average fish is over 8
pounds
Coho or Silver Salmon - The second most sought after sport fish in Alaska. You
can keep 2 silvers per day on the Kenai River. Run starts around the 1st of
August and runs through September. Average fish is over 10 pounds
Pink Salmon or Humpies - Pink Salmon only run in even numbered years. The
limit is 6 per day. These fish average 3 to 5 pounds most years.
Halibut - Halibut are in the Cook Inlet starting around the end of April.
Fishing for Halibut will usually start at that time, and occasional catches of
King Salmon are reported. By the first of May, the charters will run a combo
trip for King Salmon and Halibut. This is a great time to come up to Alaska as
the Early Season is much less crowded than the Peak in July. You can also find
some great deals on early season fishing. Captain Lou's Ptarmigan Lodge runs a
special the first 2 weeks of may on an all inclusive package... Included is
lodging, meals, 5 days of fishing, all permits and license, tips.
