Longtail
Tuna (Thunnus tonggol) Photographs
and Information
Longtail tuna are taken by trolling and as an incidental handline catch by prawn
trawlers. Longtail tuna are popular with recreational fishers on the east coast.
Longtail tuna are distributed across northern Australia. They are a neritic
species that appear to make a north-south migration following southern intrusions of warm
water.
Spawning occurs in summer and they first spawn at 60-70 cm fork length. The
maximum size is unknown, however fish 136 cm long, weighing 30 kg have been recorded from
southern Queensland.
Longtail tuna are usually eaten fresh or smoked and are used for canning.
Did you know?
Tuna cannot pump water over their gills like other fish,
instead they swim with their mouths open which forces the water
over their gills. If they stop swimming they will suffocate.
Did you know?
Tuna have hearts that are much larger than other fish, they
are about 10 times as large, relative to the size of the body.
Did you know?
The longtail tuna is an exceptionally voracious predator, easily
consuming the equivalent of two percent of its body weight
(around one kilogram) in prey every day.

Angling for
Longtail Tuna | Tuna
Fishing
:
It is a prized sporting fish which will take small lures and also live
bait. Big schools can often be seen on the
surface but are often virtually impossible to hook. At other times this fish
will take lures and baits without any previous indication of its presence. The
fight is a tough one, both on the surface and deep down.
Trolling small feathers over “holes” in the bottom and between coral reefs at
high tide produces strikes.
