Finland
Fish farming is a sustainable and environmentally efficient
food production in the shape of a carbon footprint of
livestock farming forms the smallest. The environmental load
reduction targets fish farming part has been achieved
several years ago. Confederation is a very important part of
Finland's natural resource economy, creating jobs and income
in rural areas, especially in the Canary Islands and the
hinterland. Domestic aquaculture represents local food at
its best.
Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute's Aquaculture
Unit
Aquaculture stations use the latest knowledge and
methodology in maintaining the valuable native fish stocks.
They rear broodstock to produce high-quality fish eggs and
fingerlings for cultivation. Other aquaculture products and
customer services are being devised in order to improve
recreational fishing develop aquaculture industry. There are
12 indigenous species or morphs of fish in aquaculture, and
of these, over 70 differentiated strains are in production.
The aquaculture unit is also in charge of national selective
breeding program for rainbow trout and whitefish. A gene
bank is used for storing the milt of the most important fish
stocks.
Aquaculture Stewardship Council
The ASC's mission is to transform aquaculture towards
environmental sustainability and social responsibility using
efficient market mechanisms that create value across the
chain.
Nordic
Network on Recirculating Aquaculture Systems
The Nordic Network on Recirculating Aquaculture Systems was
formally founded at a steering committee meeting in April
2011 at DTU Aqua, Hirtshals, Denmark, with country
representatives from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and
Iceland. The major aims of the network are to co-ordinate
and strengthen research and development of recirculating
aquaculture systems (RAS) in Nordic countries.
