Commercial Fishing for Tailor:

With commercial fishing, the methods used are mainly gillnets and beach seines.

Taste, Texture	Strong fishy flavour.  Soft to medium texture.

Winter and early spring are tailor time, at least along our eastern and western seaboards. In a part of the year when so many other pelagics withdraw north to warmer waters, tailor (and, further south, salmon) keep anglers satisfied in the fast-moving surface fish department. Tailor runs tend to peak earliest in the south, then sweep northward, culminating off Queensland’s south east coast, especially up along the Noosa north shore and Fraser Island, in August and September.

In Western Australia about 85 per cent of commercial landings of tailor are taken from Shark Bay, another 13 per cent in the West Coast Bioregion (which runs from Black Point, east of Augusta, to north of Kalbarri) and a tiny percentage in the South Coast Bioregion.

In 2010, the commercial value of tailor was more than $100,000.

In the Shark Bay fishery, the catch amount was 19 tonnes, well below the target set. While some reduction in abundance of tailor can’t be discounted, this is thought largely to be due to low levels of fishing ‘effort’ (the amount of fishing for a species), due to local processing restrictions.

The 2010 commercial catch in the West Coast Bioregion was five tonnes, with most caught in the Peel-Harvey Estuary. (Dept Fisheries WA)
