Fishing &
Catching Blue Mackerel or Slimy Mackerel
Angling for Slimy Mackerel
:
Blue mackerel (or Slimey
Mackerel) are caught commercially by small purse seines for use as both live and
dead bait in domestic tuna fisheries. They are also caught with ring nets and in
otter trawls in New South Wales.
They are found in waters of southern half of Australia but are also found throughout
the Western Pacific Ocean, Hawaii and the eastern Pacific.
Juveniles and small adult fish usually inhabit inshore waters, while larger adult fish
form schools in 40-200m of water over the continental shelf.
They spawn in summer.
Blue Mackerel is very good smoked.
The annual catch by
recreational fishers in NSW is likely to be between 90 and 200
tonnes.
Slimy Mackerel are found offshore, inshore and in bays around
rocks, wharves and jetties.
Slimy mackerel dine on anything from plankton to small fish
and crustaceans, meaning they will respond to a variety of different baits and
techniques. They are voracious predators and will happily dine on baits of
bread, prawns, fish , squid and molluscs.
Blue Mackerel can also be caught using imitation fishing
flies and small baitfish flies, metal lures, soft plastics and other small
lures.
One of the easiest ways to catch Blue Mackerel is using a
light hand line with a small hook, you don't have to weight the line, but you
can use a small lead running sinker if you want. Use a small piece of fish bait,
piece of prawn or squid. Get the slimys eating by using some burley. The burley
can be mashed up fish, bread or a combination. If you catch one slimy, you can
use this as burley too. Using burley creates a feeding frenzy and by just
dropping your unbaited hook in amongst the school of fish, you can catch them!
