At the moment, we only focus on installing environmental
awareness to fishing villagers about the importance of keeping their coral
reef healthy by stopping all destructive activities concerned with
fishing.
We do this by taking tourist out for snorkeling to
some of the less damaged reef in the area and the tour are conducted
entirely by the local fishermen and their families to ensure that they
feel it is worthwhile to stop bombing the reef for fish while they can
make money by preserving it through tourism activities.
We have just started this program this year with only 2
villages
taking part. Hopefully by the end of 2007, we can enlist all the villages
along the shoreline of Kota Belud.
