Kazakhstan, the ninth
largest country and the largest landlocked country in the world, is
located in Central Asia. Bordered to the north and west by Russia (6
846 km), the south by the Kyrgyz Republic (1 051 km), with
Uzbekistan (2 203 km) and Turkmenistan (379 km) lying to the west,
and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the People’s Republic of
China (1 533 km) to the east, Kazakhstan’s 2 717 300 km2 makes it
more than double the total size of the other four Central Asian
republics. Part of its international borders traverse major regional
water bodies: the Caspian Sea (1 894 km – fishing rights are shared
with the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the
Russian Federation and Turkmenistan) and the Aral Sea (1 070 km –
shared with the Republic of Uzbekistan).
The main reservoirs of
Kazakhstan, having the commercial fishery importance are: the
Caspian Sea and the Ural River, the Aral Sea and
the Syr Darya River, Balkhash Lake and the Ili River,
Alakol system of lakes, Zaisan Lake and the Irtysh
River. In addition, there are several large reservoirs and lake
systems of regional importance. Up to 70 thousand tons of fish is
caught annually in these waters, the main types of them are:
bream, carp, roach, crucian carp, silver carp, perch, pike, pike
perch, catfish, chub, snakehead, whitefish and etc.

Research Institute of Fisheries - Kazakh Research Institute
of Fishery was established in 1959 as Institute of ichthyology and
fishery of Academy of Science of Kazakh SSR on basis of Guryev-based
department of ichthyology and hydrobiology. In 1963 it was
transformed into Kazakh Research Institute of Fishery of Ministry of
Fishery. From 1992 to 1996 the institute was in the system of
Academy of Agricultural Science of Kazakhstan. From 1996 to
December, 2002 it existed in system of National Academic Center of
Agricultural Research of Ministry of education and science of
Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2002 Kazakh Research Institute of Fishery
Republic State Communal Enterprise was transformed into Research
Production Center of Fishery Republic State Enterprise of Ministry
of Agriculture of Republic of Kazakhstan.
Green Academy - Scientific Research and Education Center -
Commercial fisheries should be the alternative for fisheries - On
July 4-5, 2014 in Astana was held the workshop-training on the theme
"Biodiversity conservation and development of aquaculture" which was
organized by the Scientific Research and Education Center "Green
Academy" in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Water
Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan for deputy heads of the
interregional Inspections for water basins and state enterprise of
the Committee for Fishing Industry. The workshop aimed the
increasing the capacity in the field of biodiversity conservation,
development of commercial fisheries and aquaculture.
Fishery and Aquaculture Country Profile for Kazakhstan
- aquatic species caught by country or area, by species items, by
FAO major fishing areas, and year, for all commercial, industrial,
recreational and subsistence purposes. The harvest from mariculture,
aquaculture and other kinds of fish farming is also included.
AQUASTAT is FAO's global information
system on water and agriculture developed by the Land and Water
Division. It collects, analyses and disseminates data and
information by country and by region. Its aim is to provide users
interested in global, regional and national analyses with
comprehensive information related to water resources and
agricultural water management across the world, with emphasis on
countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
